pawn
In Italian, 'pedone' refers to the pawn piece used in the game of chess. It is the most numerous piece in the game and is typically positioned in the second row at the start of a match. The pawn has a unique movement pattern, being able to move forward one square at a time, with the option to move two squares on its first move. It captures opposing pieces diagonally and can promote to a more powerful piece, such as a queen, upon reaching the opposite end of the board.
