Today we are visiting Étretat, on the north coast of France.

Bonjour

Have you ever wondered about the French perspective on challenges? In this newsletter, we'll explore the proverb 'Impossible n'est pas français' and introduce you to some new words like 'agence', 'grandir', 'système', 'tri', and 'spécial'. Let's dive in and grow our French language skills together!

agence

The word 'agence' in French is commonly used to denote a bureau or office where business is conducted or services provided. It is similar to the English usage of the term 'agency' and can cover a wide range of contexts, such as a travel agency (agence de voyage) or news agency (agence de presse). It can be used in both formal and informal settings.

Here's how to use it:

  • L'agence de presse a publié un article sur l'événement.
  • Nous avons réservé notre voyage par une agence en ligne.
  • L'agence d'assurance offre de nombreuses options de couverture.

grandir

The term 'grandir' in French is used to express the idea of becoming larger or increasing in size, which could pertain to both physical and metaphorical growth. Just the same as in English, this term can be used to address a person’s growing in terms of age, knowledge, personal development and so on.

Here's how to use it:

  • Nous devons grandir rapidement pour survivre.
  • Ne sois pas pressé de grandir.
  • Pour grandir, il faut manger suffisamment.

système

The French word 'système' is used to denote a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network. It is used very similarly to how 'system' is used in English, suggesting a comprehensive and coordinated whole. Therefore, it fits in a variety of contexts like computer systems ('système informatique'), economic system ('système économique') or solar system ('système solaire').

Here's how to use it:

  • Le système solaire est vaste.
  • Ce système informatique est très avancé.
  • Le système de navigation a cessé de fonctionner.

tri

The French word 'tri' translates to 'sort' in English. In French, it is used the same way as the English version. You can use it when you are sorting out items, data or in general when you want to arrange something in an organized manner.

Here's how to use it:

  • Ce tri permettra de déterminer qui sera retenu pour le poste.
  • Un tri sélectif du matériel est nécessaire avant de déménager.
  • J'ai oublié de faire le tri des couleurs avant de laver mes vêtements.

spécial

The French word 'spécial' is an adjective used to denote a thing, person, event or moment that distinguishes from others because it has some unusual characteristics or it has a significant importance. It can be used to describe anything from food to occasions.

Here's how to use it:

  • Ce repas est vraiment spécial.
  • Il a un talent spécial.
  • Il a une place spéciale dans mon cœur.
