Bonjour!

Get ready to expand your English vocabulary with some French flavor! In this newsletter, we'll explore words like 'communauté', 'indiquer', 'général', 'norme', and 'mille'. Trust us, it's easier than saying 'oui' to escargot!

communauté

The French word for community is 'communauté'. This term is used much in the same way as 'community' in English. It can refer to a group of people living in the same place, a group of people with a common interest or a group of nations sharing certain interests or goals. It's derived from the Latin word 'communitas' which means public spirit. It might also be used in some other contexts, just like in English.

Here's how to use it:

  • Notre communauté locale organise souvent des événements pour enfants.
  • La beauté de la diversité peut être observée dans notre communauté.
  • Les réseaux sociaux ont permis la création de communautés en ligne.

indiquer

The French word 'indiquer' is equivalent to the english term 'indicate' usually used to show or point out something. Its usage can be found in various contexts such as to refer to the physical act of pointing or to suggest a course of action. Additionally, it is also used in the sense of signifying or denoting something.

Here's how to use it:

  • Le professeur m'a indiqué une erreur dans mon travail.
  • On m'a indiqué que l'entrevue aura lieu demain.
  • Le chef indique toujours les bonnes pratiques à suivre.

général

The French word 'général' is an adjective and it's used in many contexts, similar to the English word 'general'. It can be added before a noun to indicate the unspecific nature of the noun. For example, 'en général' means 'in general' in English.

Here's how to use it:

  • En général, je prends mon petit déjeuner à 8 heures.
  • Nous voulons un aperçu général du projet.
  • La satisfaction générale au travail est importante pour le moral des employés.

norme

The French word 'norme' translates to 'standard' in English. It is commonly used in French to refer to something that serves as a basis for comparison or a level of quality or attainment. Much like in English, 'norme' can be utilized within various contexts, such as in technology when discussing 'standards' or 'norms', or socially when discussing what is considered 'standard' or 'normal' behaviour.

Here's how to use it:

  • La norme sociale doit être respectée.
  • Cela va au-delà de la norme.
  • Nous devons établir une nouvelle norme.

mille

The French translation for 'mile' is 'mille'. In French, 'mille' is used much like 'mile' in English. It refers to a measure of distance. Note that unlike in English, 'mille' does not take the plural form when referring to multiple miles. For example, 'five miles' would be 'cinq mille' in French.

Here's how to use it:

  • Nous avons marché mille miles.
  • Il a mille et une façons de résoudre ce problème.
  • J'ai mille choses à faire avant de partir.
