année

The French word 'année' means 'year' in English. It is mostly used in the same way as in English, to refer to the period of 365 days (or 366 days in leap years) from the 1st of January to the 31st of December. Sometimes, it can also be used to refer to any period of twelve consecutive months.

Here's how to use it:

  • Il a travaillé ici pendant une année.
  • L'année prochaine, nous déménagerons.
  • Je n'ai pas vu mon ami depuis une année.

renouvellement

The French word 'renouvellement' corresponds to the English word 'renewal'. It is used in the same way as in English and can refer to the action of extending an agreement, recurring or repeating an action, or refreshing something. For example, a 'renouvellement de bail' is a lease renewal.

Here's how to use it:

  • Le renouvellement de leur engagement a été touchant.
  • C'est une opportunité pour le renouvellement des idées.
  • Le renouvellement des ressources est une préoccupation majeure.

jamais

In French, 'jamais' is the translation for 'never'. It is typically used to denote an action that will not take place at any time or under any circumstances. It is generally placed after the verb it modifies. For example, 'Je ne mange jamais de viande' translates to 'I never eat meat'. Furthermore, in modern French, 'jamais' can simply mean 'ever' in certain contexts when used without the negation 'ne'.

Here's how to use it:

  • Il n'a jamais mangé de sushi.
  • Je ne reçois jamais de lettres d'amour.
  • Jamais vu une telle chose.

université

The French word for 'university' is 'université'. This term is frequently used in academic and educational contexts, very much similar to how 'university' is used in English. It refers to institutions of higher education and research which provide both undergraduate and post-graduate education.

Here's how to use it:

  • J'étudie le droit à l'université.
  • Mon professor à l'université est très compétent.
  • L'université sera fermée pendant les vacances d'été.

poisson

The word 'poisson' in French is used similarly to the English 'fish'. You can use it to refer to the animals that live in water, the act of fishing, and also for the dish cooked with fish as an ingredient.

Here's how to use it:

  • Le poisson est dans l'aquarium.
  • Le chat aime le poisson.
  • Il pêche un gros poisson.
