carte

The French word 'carte' translates to 'card' in English. It is used quite similarly to how it's used in English, like in the context of a business card ('carte de visite'), a playing card ('carte à jouer'), or a menu card in a restaurant ('carte du jour'). It's pronounced kahrt.

Here's how to use it:

  • Je vais retirer de l'argent avec ma carte.
  • Il donne sa carte à la serveuse.
  • J'ai reçu une carte postale de Paris.

alors

The French word for 'then' is 'alors'. It is used in a similar context as in English, often to indicate a sequence of events. For example, 'First I woke up, then I brushed my teeth' can be translated to 'D'abord je me suis réveillé, alors je me suis brossé les dents' in French. However, 'alors' can also mean 'so' in certain contexts.

Here's how to use it:

  • Alors, on y va?
  • Alors, tu viens ce soir?
  • C'est ton choix, alors?

indiquer

The French word 'indiquer' is equivalent to the english term 'indicate' usually used to show or point out something. Its usage can be found in various contexts such as to refer to the physical act of pointing or to suggest a course of action. Additionally, it is also used in the sense of signifying or denoting something.

Here's how to use it:

  • Le professeur m'a indiqué une erreur dans mon travail.
  • Je vais indiquer les réponses correctes.
  • Le chef indique toujours les bonnes pratiques à suivre.

inquiétude

The French word 'inquiétude' is used in the same context as 'worry' in English. It is often used to express concern or anxiety about something. Like 'worry', 'inquiétude' can be used either as a noun or as a verb (s'inquiéter) depending on the context.

Here's how to use it:

  • Votre inquiétude est tout à fait compréhensible.
  • J'ai une certaine inquiétude à propos de cela.
  • L'inquiétude règne dans la ville suite à l'accident.

déterminer

The French word 'déterminer' is used similarly to the English word 'determine'. It can be utilized in the context of making a decision after considering all possible choices and outcomes, identifying the nature or specifics of something, or causing something to occur in a particular way. Its use is common in formal spoken and written language.

Here's how to use it:

  • Nous avons besoin d'études supplémentaires pour déterminer l'efficacité du traitement.
  • Ses efforts pour déterminer la vérité ont été infructueux.
  • Il faut déterminer le coût total avant de prendre une décision.
