View in browser
Today we are playing games in Luomuzhen, China - thanks to Joey Huang.

Hello English Learners!

Get ready to expand your Chinese vocabulary and share a laugh with us today! We'll be teaching you some new words like 扇子 (shànzi, fan), 长凳 (chángdèng, bench), 情感 (qínggǎn, emotion), 问 (wèn, ask), and 句子 (jùzi, sentence). Plus, we have a hilarious joke for you: '谁最知道猪?蜘蛛人!' (Who knows the most about pigs? Spiderman!)

扇子

shàn zi

In Chinese, 'fan' translates to '扇子(shànzi)'. It is used both for something that is used to create a cooling air current, especially a handheld item often made of paper or fabric on a folding frame, and an object made in the shape of a segment of a circle, typically out of paper or fabric, that is waved so as to cool the person holding it.

Here's how to use it:

  • 她摇着扇子坐在椅子上。
tā yáo zhe shànzi zuò zài yǐzi shàng.
  • 她习惯用扇子遮阳。
    tā xíguàn yòng shànzi zhēyáng.
  • 她把扇子放在包里。
tā bǎ shànzi fàng zài bāo lǐ.

长凳

zhǎng dèng

The Chinese word for bench is '长凳'. It is usually referred as a long seat for several people, typically made of wood or stone. It is commonly used in public areas like parks.

Here's how to use it:

  • 我把钱包忘在长凳上了。
wǒ bǎ qiánbāo wàng zài chángdèng shàngle.
  • 长凳上的涂鸦很有趣。
chángdèng shàng de tú yā hěn yǒuqù.
  • 他们正在长凳畔享受野餐。
tāmen zhèngzài chángdèng pàn xiǎngshòu yěcān.

情感

qíng gǎn

The Chinese term for emotion is '情感', used similarly to English to describe feelings and affective states. It is commonly used in a variety of context, expressing different kinds of feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, etc.

Here's how to use it:

  • 这个电影触动了我深藏的情感。
Zhège diànyǐng chùdòngle wǒ shēncáng de qínggǎn.
  • 他曾经的情感经历让他更加成熟。
Tā céngjīng de qínggǎn jīnglì ràng tā gèngjiā chéngshú.
  • 情感好比大海,深不可测。
Qínggǎn hǎobǐ dàhǎi, shēn bùkě cè.

wèn

The Chinese word for 'ask' is '问' (wèn). The contextual usage is similar to English. It can be used for questioning, inquiring or requesting for information. Some examples include '你可以问我问题' (You can ask me a question) or '我想问你一些事情' (I want to ask you some things).

Here's how to use it:

  • 我要问你一个问题。
Wǒ yào wèn nǐ yīgè wèntí.
  • 妈妈问儿子做了什么。
    Māmā wèn érzi zuòle shénme.
  • 你问的问题很好。
Nǐ wèn de wèntí hěn hǎo.

句子

jù zǐ

In Chinese, '句子' means sentence. It is commonly used to refer to a set of words that is complete in itself, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command, and consisting of a main constant and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses. Like English, a Chinese sentence also has grammar and syntax that govern its structure.

Here's how to use it:

  • 我正在写一个句子。
wǒ zhèngzài xiě yí ge jùzi.
  • 我要一个复杂的句子。
wǒ yào yí ge fùzá de jùzi.
  • 这个句子太长了。
zhè ge jùzi tài cháng le.
