Hello English Learners!

Ready to dive into Chinese culture and language? This week, we're exploring the proverb '胸有成竹' and learning new words like '咨询', '已婚', '周末', '祖母', and '辞职'. Let's embark on this exciting journey together!

咨询

zīxún

The Chinese word '咨询' is used the same as English 'consult'. It refers to asking someone, such as an expert or a professional, for information or advice. It is often used in medical, legal, or any professional context where one person has the information that another person needs.

Here's how to use it:

  • 对于这个问题,你可以咨询他。
Duìyú zhège wèntí, nǐ kěyǐ zīxún tā.
  • 这是一个咨询电话。
    Zhè shì yīgè zīxún diànhuà.
  • 我应该咨询我的律师。
Wǒ yīnggāi zīxún wǒ de lǜshī.

已婚

yǐ hūn

The Chinese word '已婚' refers to someone who is already legally bound in a marriage relationship. It can be used in various contexts such as stating one's marital status or to refer to someone who is married.

Here's how to use it:

  • 他已婚,有两个孩子。
Tā yǐ hūn, yǒu liǎng gè háizi.
  • 已婚的人有责任感。
Yǐhūn de rén yǒu zérèn gǎn.
  • 已婚男性需要浪漫。
    Yǐ hūn nánxìng xūyào làngmàn.

周末

zhōu mò

The word '周末' is used in Chinese much in the same way 'weekend' is used in English, to refer to Saturday and Sunday or the last two days of the week. You can use it in sentences like '这个周末我会去购物' meaning 'I will go shopping this weekend'.

Here's how to use it:

  • 周末你有空吗?
    zhōumò nǐ yǒu kòng ma?
  • 周末是我最快乐的时候
zhōumò shì wǒ zuì kuàilè de shíhòu
  • 看看周末的天气预报
kàn kàn zhōumò de tiānqì yùbào

祖母

zǔ mǔ

In Chinese, '祖母' refers to the mother of one's parent, which is known as 'grandmother' in English. It is often used to talk about family relations and is a respectful title in Chinese culture.

Here's how to use it:

  • 祖母带我们去公园。
zǔ mǔ dài wǒ men qù gōng yuán
  • 我喜欢和祖母聊天。
wǒ xǐ huān yǔ zǔ mǔ liáo tiān
  • 我的祖母是一位好厨子。
wǒ de zǔ mǔ shì yī wèi hǎo chú zǐ

辞职

cí zhí

'辞职' means 'quit', particularly in terms of leaving a job or post. It is used in a formal context to denote resigning from a professional position. It is important to note that '辞职' is more specific than 'quit' which can be used in various contexts in English.

Here's how to use it:

  • 她写了一封长长的辞职信。
tā xiě le yī fēng cháng cháng de cí zhí xìn.
  • 你对辞职有什么看法?
nǐ duì cí zhí yǒu shén me kàn fǎ?
  • 我前天刚递交了辞职信。
wǒ qián tiān gāng dì jiāo le cí zhí xìn.
