Hello

Ever heard of the saying 'Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder'? In Chinese, we have a similar proverb: '情人眼里出西施'. In this newsletter, we'll explore this proverb and learn some new words such as: 技能 (skills), 油 (oil/smooth), 某处 (somewhere), 职责 (responsibility), 表达 (expression). Let's dive in!

技能

ji4 neng2

The Chinese word for 'skill' is '技能'. It is a commonly used noun in Mandarin. It can apply to various categories ranging from physical abilities, intellectual competencies to special crafts. As in English, '技能' can be used to indicate someone's particular ability to execute or accomplish a task with proficiency.

Here's how to use it:

  • 她具有出色的烹饪技能。
Tā jùyǒu chūsè de pēngrèn jìnéng.
  • 通过学习,我们可以提升我们的技能。

In Chinese, the word for oil is '油'. It is used in similar contexts as in English, such as cooking oil ('食用油'), motor oil ('机油') or oily ('油腻'). Chinese cuisine typically makes use of various types of oils for frying, sautéing, and other cooking methods.

职责 is a Chinese term that indicates a moral or legal obligation a person has, which is equivalent to the English term 'duty'. This can refer to a task or action that someone is required to perform because of their job or role. It is commonly used in both a formal setting and casual conversation, spanning a wide range of contexts.

Here's how to use it:
