Today we are taking a walk on a rainy day in Shanghai.

Hi there!

Get ready to embark on a fascinating journey into Chinese culture and language. In this newsletter, we'll explore a thought-provoking proverb, '饮水思源' (yǐn shuǐ sī yuán), and learn essential words like 比 (bǐ), 辩解 (biàn jiě), 指导 (zhǐdǎo), 整洁 (zhěngjié), and 到 (dào). Let's dive in together!

The Chinese character '比' is used similarly to 'than' in English to compare two things. for example, 'A比B大' can be translated as 'A is bigger than B'. Unlike english, '比' is placed between two objects being compared and not after like in English.

Here's how to use it:

  • 你的汉语水平比我好。
nǐ de hàn yǔ shuǐ píng bǐ wǒ hǎo
  • 今天比昨天冷。
jīn tiān bǐ zuó tiān lěng
  • 明天会比今天更忙。
míng tiān huì bǐ jīn tiān gèng máng

辩解

biànjiě

In Chinese, '辩解' is used in much the same contexts as 'justify' in English. It means to offer an explanation or reason for something, often in defense of one's actions or opinions. It is commonly used in written and verbal communication.

Here's how to use it:

  • 他的辩解并未被接受。
Tā de biànnjiè bìng wèi bèi jiēshòu.
  • 她没有必要为自己的行为辩解。
Tā méiyǒu bìyào wèi zìjǐ de xíngwéi biànnjiè.
  • 他找不出任何理由来辩解自己。
Tā zhǎo bù chū rènhé lǐyóu lái biànnjiè zìjǐ.

指导

zhǐdǎo

In Chinese, the word '指导' means guidance and it is primarily used to refer to the act of pointing out and directing, similar to how 'guidance' is used in English. It is used when someone is being led or advised by another person, especially with regard to educational or vocational situations. It can also be used in the context of guidance systems in technology.

Here's how to use it:

  • 我需要你的指导。
    Wǒ xūyào nǐ de zhǐdǎo.
  • 他们给予新员工指导。
    Tāmen jǐyǔ xīn yuángōng zhǐdǎo.
  • 我们根据他的指导行动。
Wǒmen gēnjù tā de zhǐdǎo xíngdòng.

整洁

zhěngjié

The Chinese word '整洁' means neat, tidy or clean. It is used to describe something that is well-ordered, clean, tidy or in good arrangement, similar to the English use of the word 'neat'. This can be used for objects, place or even abstract things such as ideas or plans.

Here's how to use it:

  • 他的房间非常整洁。
    ta1 de5 fang2 jian1 fei1 chang2 zheng3 jie2
  • 请保持工作区整洁。
    qing3 bao3 chi2 gong1 zuo4 qu1 zheng3 jie2
  • 医院必须保持整洁。
    yi1 yuan4 bi4 xu1 bao3 chi2 zheng3 jie2

dào

The Chinese word '到' is used similarly to the English preposition 'to'. It is often used to express the destination of a movement or change. Just like in English, '到' is used in various complex grammatical structures.

Here's how to use it:

  • 火车到了
    huǒchē dào le
  • 你到家务事做
    nǐ dào jiāwù shì zuò
  • 他到机场接我
    tā dào jīchǎng jiē wǒ
