Today we are taking a walk on a rainy day in Shanghai.

Hi there!

Get ready to expand your Chinese vocabulary and dive into the world of Chinese proverbs! Today, we're exploring the proverb '爱屋及乌' and learning words like 分支, 羞耻, 剪, 偷, and 说服. Let's embark on this exciting language journey together!

分支

fēn zhī

The Chinese translation of 'branch' is '分支' (fēn zhī). In English, branch refers to a part of a tree that grows out from the trunk or from a bough. It can also refer to a division of a business or other organization, or a conceptual division or offshoot. Similarly, in Chinese context '分支' can be used to describe a subdivision or a secondary part of something larger or more complex, such as an organization or a concept.

Here's how to use it:

  • 他設計了新的分支工廠。
Tā shèjìle xīn de fēnzhī gōngchǎng.
  • 這個分支項目需要進一步的規劃。
Zhè gè fēnzhī xiàngmù xūyào jìnyībù de guīhuà.
  • 分支路徑是選擇的一部分。
Fēnzhī lùjìng shì xuǎnzé de yí bùfèn.

羞耻

xiū chǐ

In Chinese, '羞耻' expresses the feeling of embarrassment, humiliation or disgrace – similar to its English counterpart 'shame'. It can be used in a variety of contexts, often relating to a personal feeling of guilt or dishonor due to one’s own or another’s actions.

Here's how to use it:

  • 他的行为让他感到羞耻。
tā de xíngwéi ràng tā gǎndào xiūchǐ.
  • 这是个羞耻的秘密。
zhè shì gè xiūchǐ de mìmì.
  • 我们必须拒绝羞耻的行为。
wǒmen bìxū jùjué xiūchǐ de xíngwéi.

jiǎn

The Chinese character '剪' is used in the same context as 'cut' in English. It can be used to describe reducing something (剪短), a physical action (剪纸) such as cutting paper, or modifying something (剪发), like getting a haircut.

Here's how to use it:

  • 我需要剪短我的头发。
wǒ xūyào jiǎn duǎn wǒ de tóufǎ.
  • 请剪掉这段音乐。
qǐng jiǎn diào zhè duàn yīnyuè.
  • 剪下这张桥。
    jiǎn xià zhè zhāng qiáo.

tōu

The Chinese word '偷' is used in a similar way as the English word 'steal'. It typically refers to the act of taking someone else's property without permission and with the intention of keeping it. For example, '他偷了我的钱包' means 'He stole my wallet'.

Here's how to use it:

  • 偷钱是犯罪行为。
    tōu qián shì fànzuì xíngwéi.
  • 谁偷走了我的水杯?
Shuí tōu zǒu le wǒ de shuǐbēi?
  • 别偷懒。
    Bié tōulǎn.

说服

shuō fú

The Chinese word '说服' (shuō fú) is used similarly to the English word 'convince.' It is a verb, used to describe the act of persuading someone to believe or do something by presenting logical, rational, or compelling reasons or evidence. This word is commonly used in both formal and informal situations.

Here's how to use it:

  • 我花了很多时间说服他相信我
wǒ huāle hěnduō shíjiān shuōfú tā xiāngxìn wǒ
  • 他们正在尝试说服我这个计划是有效的
tāmen zhèngzài chángshì shuōfú wǒ zhège jìhuà shì yǒuxiào de
  • 他用所有的力量尝试说服她留下来
tā yòng suǒyǒu de lìliàng chángshì shuōfú tā liú xiàlái
