Today is just another day working in Beijing 🙂

Hello

Embark on a journey to learn Chinese and discover its proverbs, like '良禽择木而栖,贤臣择主而事', along with everyday words such as '明天', '团结', '浪费', '网站', and '借'.

明天

míng tiān

The Chinese word '明天' (míng tiān) represents tomorrow. It is used in the same way as in English, to refer to the day after the present day. It is a compound of two characters: 明 (míng) which means 'bright' and 天 (tiān) which means 'day'. They are combined to symbolically mean 'the bright day', or 'the day after the current day'. This word is widely used in Chinese conversations and writings to indicate future plans or events.

Here's how to use it:

  • 明天是周五。
    Míngtiān shì zhōuwǔ.
  • 如果明天下雨,我就不去。
Rúguǒ míngtiān xià yǔ, wǒ jiù bù qù.
  • 明天见。
    Míngtiān jiàn.

团结

tuánjié

The Chinese word '团结' is used in a similar context as in English. It can often be seen in political, social, or team situations to express cohesion and collaboration. It can be used in phrases like '团结一致' (unanimous unity) or '团结力量大' (unity is strength).

Here's how to use it:

  • 他们团结在一起。
    tāmen tuánjié zài yīqǐ.
  • 团结把我们带向胜利。
tuánjié bǎ wǒmen dài xiàng shènglì.
  • 团结有助于我们的进步。
tuánjié yǒuzhù yú wǒmen de jìnbù.

浪费

làng fèi

In Chinese, waste or '浪费' is used in the same context as in English. It can refer to either material waste or the waste of time or resources. For example, '这是浪费时间' means 'this is a waste of time'. It also carries the same negative connotations of misuse or overuse.

Here's how to use it:

  • 浪费时间就是犯罪。
    Làngfèi shíjiān jiùshì fànzuì.
  • 浪费水是一种不负责任的行为。
Làngfèi shuǐ shì yī zhǒng bùfù zérèn de xíngwéi.
  • 他喜欢浪费他的才能。
Tā xǐhuān làngfèi tā de cáinéng.

网站

wǎngzhàn

The Chinese word for 'web' is '网站' which is mainly used to describe things related to the internet or network. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with other words to refer to a specific type of website or web page.

Here's how to use it:

  • 这是我们的网站。
zhè shì wǒ men de wǎng zhàn.
  • 这个网站需要密码。
zhè gè wǎng zhàn xū yào mì mǎ.
  • 我喜欢这个网站的设计。
wǒ xǐ huān zhè gè wǎng zhàn de shè jì.

jiè

The Chinese word for 'borrow' is '借' (jiè). It is a verb that means to receive a thing from someone temporarily, intending to return it. In Mandarin Chinese, it can be used just like its English equivalent. For example, in the sentence '我可以借你的笔吗?' (Wǒ kěyǐ jiè nǐ de bǐ ma?), it means 'Can I borrow your pen?'

Here's how to use it:

  • 他从图书馆借了一本书。
Tā cóng túshūguǎn jièle yì běn shū.
  • 你可以借我你的自行车吗?
Nǐ kěyǐ jiè wǒ nǐ de zìxíngchē ma?
  • 她从他那里借了一件衣服。
Tā cóng tā nàlǐ jièle yī jiàn yīfú.
