Vocab lists by topics are here!

Quite frequently at the bottom of the daily LangBites emails, I insert a link inviting our community to share how they would like our service to be improved.

Thankfully many of you contribute! ❤️

One of our most popular requests has been to offer vocab words grouped by different topics. In most months, this feature is requested by ~11% of those who respond on the feedback form - about 60 of you have asked for this feature so far this year !

What are Topics?

Well I'm pleased to share that Topics are now rolling out to all languages!

With Topics, words are now grouped together with one or more tags - meaning you can quickly brush up on words in a particular topic you are interested in.

These tags group words together as some combination of:

  1. Parts of speech, for example "nouns", "verbs", "adverbs" and so on.
  2. A subject matter, for example "food and drinks", "sports", and so on.
  3. Other categories, for example "slang", or "greetings".

How many Topics are there?

We're starting with ~100 Topics in all languages, with words slowly being added to these Topics every week.

Here's what the list of all Topics in Spanish looks like:

What does a single Topic look like?

Each Topic contains words which we consider relevant to the particular Topic, in that language.

For example, the Spanish Food & Drinks topic will include words ranging from aceite de girasol to adobar .

How do I browse Topics?

Here are the links to all Topics for the languages we currently offer:

  1. Spanish
  2. French
  3. Chinese
  4. Italian
  5. German

You can also navigate to these topics via the links at the bottom of each page.

Of course, once you reach these Topics pages you can dive deeper into any individual Topic you like.

Some Improvements to come

I wanted to get Topics available for the community as soon as possible, meaning there are some rough edges to this feature.

In particular, there are 2 areas we are working on:

Incomplete tagging

Unfortunately, currently not all words are tagged in all languages, and not all are tagged correctly .

We offer about 10,000 words in our vocab list in each language and I know not all words are tagged correctly right now 😥.

Our Topics are continuously being reviewed to ensure accuracy - I know there are some errors, but I'm aiming to get these more accurate over time.

Topics in our daily emails

We're working to introduce Topics into the emails we send to you every day. I'd love to see emails with words just for "Christmas" (at the right time of year, of course!).

This is not quite ready yet, but will be soon 🤞🏽.

Final Thoughts

I hope you find this feature useful.

As I mentioned at the start of this post, this feature came about because of suggestions from the community. If you would like to make a suggestion yourself, here's the link for providing feedback 🙏

Never stop learning,

Mike
